Okay, but who funds the show?

We do. The show is made by two guys who thought a podcast could help people see why birds are cool. No funding, no network, and guests who kindly donate their time.

If it’s made you look twice at a bird, a donation keeps it going. Want something in return? Our merch is pretty cool, but it costs us a lot to make, so a donation goes further.

Behind the scenes scrapbook

What it takes to bring you

A very official scrapbook of how our show gets made and what your support goes to.

Sticker: Okay, But... Birds. No binoculars required.
Sticky notes of episode ideas on a sheet of brown paper, sorted under topic headings.
Sorting sticky notes across a dining table.

Every episode starts as a sticky note.

Then the notes get sorted. And re-sorted.

Overhead view of two people drilling a timber frame together on a garage floor.
The unpainted set wall: layered wavy plywood panels with a round sun held up in one corner.

We built the set ourselves. In our garage, where we film in cold winters and hot summers.

The set is real, and made out of very heavy wood.

Sticker: Birds. Brains. Drama.
A paint-covered hand held up in front of the half-painted set wall.
The finished set: orange sun, yellow and green waves, a microphone on a boom arm and an Okay, But... Birds mug.

But worth it!

Scavenger hunt: go watch an episode and see if you can spot Scott’s breath, or the sweat beading up on his forehead. Someday we’ll get A/C (fingers crossed).

Record day: a laptop showing an audio waveform in the foreground, the host at the desk behind a camera.
The guest kit open: headphones, a light, a Shure microphone, a webcam and cables in a padded case.

Record day.

Guests volunteer their time. We mail each one a mic, headphones, a light and a camera so they look and sound as good as they can for you.

Sticker: Okay, But... Birds podcast egg.
An editing timeline on a monitor with an episode rendering.
A laptop in the edit showing a list of markers named for birds: snow bunting, ibis, snow geese, hornbills.
A guest on the remote recording screen, wearing the kit headphones.

Then the edit. So much edit.

The bird videos and sounds you see and hear in an episode? We pay for a lot of those too.

Sticker: Nerdy, beaky fun.

Then we load it up everywhere and pay for hosting, so you can watch or listen wherever’s convenient.

And we reluctantly dive into social media so more people find the show :D

That’s the show.

A garage, a lot of sticky notes, and guests kind enough to give us their time. Thanks for keeping it flying.
